The Holistic Body and the prevention of disease
The last 30 years has seen a massive change in the way we view our bodies and our health. 2007 will see the advent of smoking bans in pubs and restaurants, and gyms/fitness suites are available on virtually every street corner. Doctors are beginning to realize that many people are not satisfied with "the offending body part" being treated - they are wanting a more holistic approach and one that involves many of the complimentary therapies that are available to us today. If we are to take responsibility for our own health and start to prevent disease from occurring, we have to be able to make educated decisions about what we need to do to ensure we are optimizing our health My own interest in "things alternative" began a very long time ago. My grandmother was well ahead of her time and I still have copies of her "Here's Health" magazines dating back 40+ years and copies of a magazine advertising vitamin and mineral supplements from Gerard House. We were the only household I knew who ate brown bread (Hovis of course). Incidentally she lived to be a healthy 97 year old!! However my real interest began back in 1987 when I embarked on a course in Nutritional Therapy with Patrick Holford. This was a real eye opener for me. I became more aware of the importance of the holistic approach and the real meaning of the saying "we are what we eat" The Holistic Approach For me the holistic approach to the body involves * Discovering our metabolic type * Following an appropriate diet * Purposeful supplementation * Regular exercise * Regular body work * Regular detoxification |
